The Baung Catfish

Baung Catfish or its scientific name Mystus spp. are among the freshwater fish you can find in the ASEAN countries including Malaysia. There are different type of Baung Catfish. The one I caught is called Flat-headed catfish, Root catfish or Mystus Planiceps.

This type of catfish can grow up to 20 kg. The baits you can use to fish Baung is usually ants, use 5 to 10 ants per hook, or use a large worm or chicken intestines if you can't find some ants. According to local residents, there was a time in the 60's, people used to fish Baung with soap. For me, I just use small shrimp. No fuss no cuss.

Back From The Village

You know when you haven't done something in soooo long, it's really hard to get back into it.  I kept telling myself that I was going to start blogging again, and even took pics of lots of stuff with the intention of blogging it. But, life just happens and I just didn't get around to it. However, tonight, I'm giving it a try again.

So, the big question is, where do I start?  Should I go back months or should I start with today.  I think I will just start by sharing some of the pics I took while I was away in my village.

Catching tiny shrimps for fishing bait.

I manage to catch this type of catfish and some Mahseer fry a few times. This fellow weights almost a kilo. We called this type of catfish the Baung. I'll write more about the Baung in my next post.

Learning to fish.

Snakeheads In The Pond

The list of fish that can make men curse (or cuss) with fear has up to this point pretty much been limited to very large sharks. Now you can add another one to the list: The Snakehead.

The giant snakehead is a carnivorous fish that feasts on pretty much anything in its path, and has caused all manner of destruction in places where it has been introduced.  Maybe you think I'm overstating the problem a bit. After all it’s just a fish, right? Wrong. This is not your everyday fish.

Most Asked Question About Betta

Are Betta fish stupid??? A friend of mine asked me this question recently. No. Betta are very savvy instinctive creatures. Its only certain owners that may lack intelligence. (Personal Opinion)

Fish and other animals evolve to cope with certain environments. Even when they're removed from those environments they retain some of their instinctual habits, so their behavior may seem irrational. When you spend much time watching fish in aquariums, it's easy to conclude that they do indeed think, learn and feel emotions. The small brain that most fish have limits only their sophistication. Of course, that's just one opinion.

Well I haven't meet any Betta or other fish species which own a Nobel Prize, but I believe in their own way they are intelligent. Some more, some less intelligent, just like humans.
Usually people buy and keep fishes because of their looks, not because their intelligence. Quotient...or I'm wrong?
